On the following pages you will find a brief introduction into room acoustics. This is supposed to complement the calculators and to help you understand the related technical terms used on this website.

The special field of room acoustics deals with the propagation of sound in rooms. The intelligibility of speech in a theatre or the clarity of music in a concert hall, for instance, is investigated here. Our daily life is constantly influenced by room acoustics, e.g. in factory buildings, open-plan offices, cafeterias, and restaurants.

Building acoustics, on the other hand, comprises all matters related to sound transmission and sound insulation between rooms, e.g. determination of the sound reduction index of walls, windows, doors, and ceilings.

More information on this subject you will find in the various textbooks and scientific publications listed under the heading of literature.
